Voting Now Open For Battle of the Boroughs: The Bronx

April 4, 2011

The three finalists have been chosen from the seven groups competing to represent The Bronx (see the video here). When you are ready click here to vote.

And the finalists are:

Finotee

Finotee: The Poly-ethnic train to funky town.

Led by a dynamic pair of glamourous ladies, Finotee was the poly-ethnic train to funky town. This band was made up of mature musicians who clearly are comfortable making music together. They have more than 100 years of music experience between them and it all culminated in a rich, if somewhat lyrically unintelligible, song on Friday night.

Just A Lil Bit

Representing Co-op City, Just A Lil Bit left no doubt as to their musical prowess.

Representing not only the Bronx, but more specifically Co-op City, Just A Lil Bit showed the crowd what a band of virtuosos could do. From the funkadelic guitar riffs to the sizzling saxophone solo to the outstanding drummer the song was a tour through the band’s musical abilities. Just A Lil Bit has also been playing together for many years. These guys practically grew up together. One member of the band said, “We know what works because we don’t only know each other’s styles, we know each other’s personalities.

The Steven Oquendo Latin Jazz Orchestra

Let's all get up and dance to the wonderful music of the Steven Oquendo Orchestra.

While it’s not fair to compare this amazing orchestra to the other six groups, they were clearly the most outstanding. This is the type of group that you hire if you are wealthy and your daughter is getting married. This is the type of group you hire for civic events honoring foreign dignitaries. The whole time they played, I just eyed the floor in front of me debating whether they would be bothered if Kenya and I started dancing. I refrained, but not because they left me wanting. This band is outstanding.

Don’t forget! Click here to vote for your favorite.

The Parade of Eternal Youth (kind of looks like Halloween out of season).

April 4, 2011

The best parades, not least of all because they are short and to the point, don’t always happen on fifth ave. This one took us by surprise today walking down Metropolitan Ave in Brooklyn. And, Kenya got the first Easter egg of the season out of it.

Hope you had a great weekend!

Battle of the Boroughs Video – The Bronx

April 2, 2011

Last night seven groups competed to represent The Bronx this year in the Battle of the Boroughs sponsored by WNYC at The Greene Space. More commentary to come — for now, dig into this short video showing a little taste of each group.

Don’t forget the free Clifton Anderson concert at BAM tonight. Hope to see you there!

Make Coney Make Money!

April 28, 2009

Coney Island

A land developer in New York City land developer can’t crease a piece of paper without causing some controversy and the Coney Island Festival By The Sea, proposed by Thor Equities is no different. Although Coney Island is undergoing a significant redevelopment, the developers, in an effort to capitalize on their transitional land, have proposed a temporary street fair beginning Friday May 15 and running every day through the summer and then hopefully on the weekends after that. It is expected that the vendors will be many of the same seen in street fairs all over the city but at least in this particular venue you can chill on the beach for a while after shopping for thousands of things you never needed in the first place.

The Festival by the Sea website is attractive and well laid out but makes no secret about the fact that the festival is subject to shorter hours and cancelled days any time as I’m sure the proprietors are not sure people will make the hour long trek out to Coney Island to spend money with street vendors. It could be a really great time since the proposed area for the fair is large and Thor Equities seems dedicated to making it work. Of course if its a bust there is always the beach to fall back on.

April 24-27: TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour

TribecaThe TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour is a free, self-guided tour of approximately 100 artists’ studios throughout TriBeCa. Bringing artists and the public together, it provides an opportunity for visitors to interact with the artists and see their artwork at the source, the artist’s own studio. An artist-run organization, TOAST has led a true metropolitan “grass roots” path.  It began as an ad-hoc group of artists who wanted to revive a neighborhood art walk.  Now a not-for-profit organization, it is still a grass roots effort, run by the participating artists. Neighborhood businesses and supporters supplement most of the needed funds not covered by the artists’ entry fees.

Lend Me Your Ear: Tyson’s Time on the Silver Screen

April 21, 2009

tysonYesterday, my company New Strategy Media, had the opportunity to produce and conduct an interview with Mike Tyson and James Tobak at the Regency Hotel in Manhattan oh behalf of Sony Pictures. After literally a lifetime of hearing cutting remarks and derogatory statements about Mike Tyson, my experience with him was very positive. He was humble, easy to work with, soft spoken and flexible. He graciously answered the questions he was asked, telling us about the trials and victories he’s had over the course of his life.

When asked where he saw himself in ten years he replied: I plan to be alive. Everything else is just a blessing.

Whether this modesty is simply a marketing ploy or if it is actually the evidence that his experiences have tempered his character, I do not know. The movie should be fascinating. At Cannes, where it premiered, it received a ten minute standing ovation. It’s already been released to select theatres around the US. Check out the trailer below and post your comments if you’ve already seen the movie.

Promissing Playwright Producing New Work at Columbia

April 19, 2009

Columbia's Graduating MFA's present new work.

Columbia's Graduating MFA's present new work.

Josh Koenigsberg is set to graduate with his MFA in Playwriting this year. While at Columbia he has established himself as one of the most promissing young playwrights in New York City. In honor of his graduation his school will be producing one of his shows tomorrow and Wednesday. While it can be quite a hike up to Columbia, Koenigsberg is worth the trek.

Although Koenigsberg’s plays stand out more for their ability to take the mundane and make it team with life and intrigue, the plot of Al’s Business Cards is this:

When New Jersey gaffing assistant Al Gurvis gets his new business cards accidentally swapped with those of real-estate agent Eileen Lee, he’s mildly annoyed. Little does he know that this tiny mix up has sparked a chain reaction which will ultimately ruin his life.

Al’s Business Cards
A comedy by Josh Koenigsberg
Directed by Ken Kaissar

Playing at Riverside Theatre
91 Claremont Ave
New York, NY 10027

Thursday, April 16th at 8:30PM
Sunday, April 19th at 8:00PM
Wednesday, April 22nd at 8:00PM

“It’s a lot more complicated than it actually seems.”

April 18, 2009

tori-spellingIndeed it is. With the glamorous Tori Spelling nothing ever seems to be very simple.

Tori was in Manhattan today promoting her new book, Mommywood, about the ups and downs of giving birth to her second child and living it up in Hollywood. No one can seem to get at much of anything besides her estranged relationship with her mother. The poor darling was berated by the women of The View about how she needed to reconcile the relationship.

Family dysfunction aside, Tori has had an impressive career although it has sped along a much lower trajectory that I’m sure she would have hoped. From coming up in bit parts on Sitcoms to landing a solid role on 91210 in the 90s to made-for-TV movies and finally two seasons of reality TV, she’s prolonged her career better than most of her peers.

Although her tenacity is admirable, she elicits a subtle sympathy as she paddles hard against the current that is washing her on the shore.

Recommended for ages 4 and up. Check the website for information on where/when to pick up your free tickets.

ArtLog’s Collect LES Art Crawl

les-artThis might be fun, however the connotation of crawl is definitely more alcohol less art which might be why they are charging $15. Basically you buy a ticket and you can go around visiting 29 different galleries on the LES Saturday evening from 6:30-8:00. That’s not enough time to see 29 galleries but probably enough time to get your money’s worth. It is recommended to simply schedule some other time to see the galleries for free and then buy yourself a couple drinks. If you are still interested, follow this link.
