Frick Hosts Intl. Fine Art Fair Opening Tomorrow

April 29, 2009

FrickThe 16th annual International Fine Art Fair takes place at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City from the May 1st-5th, 2009, with a Preview Opening for The Frick Collection on the evening of Thursday, April 30th. The preview is open to members of The Frick or those who would like to purchase tickets. That link is here.

This well-known showcase features over 700 years of fine art.  It has always attracted institutional and private buyers and remains the only “high end” fair in the world devoted solely to paintings, drawings and sculpture.  Exhibitors from the USA and Europe take part in the fair annually, enriching it with their own particular speciality, and in recent years there has been an increase in the participation of American dealers offering American art of the 19th and 20thcenturies.

Although attendees should not expect much by way of contemporary art, this show is still a staple in the art collecting world and no matter what you collect attending this show can give you better bearings as to the historical context of post-modern work.

Make Coney Make Money!

April 28, 2009

Coney Island

A land developer in New York City land developer can’t crease a piece of paper without causing some controversy and the Coney Island Festival By The Sea, proposed by Thor Equities is no different. Although Coney Island is undergoing a significant redevelopment, the developers, in an effort to capitalize on their transitional land, have proposed a temporary street fair beginning Friday May 15 and running every day through the summer and then hopefully on the weekends after that. It is expected that the vendors will be many of the same seen in street fairs all over the city but at least in this particular venue you can chill on the beach for a while after shopping for thousands of things you never needed in the first place.

The Festival by the Sea website is attractive and well laid out but makes no secret about the fact that the festival is subject to shorter hours and cancelled days any time as I’m sure the proprietors are not sure people will make the hour long trek out to Coney Island to spend money with street vendors. It could be a really great time since the proposed area for the fair is large and Thor Equities seems dedicated to making it work. Of course if its a bust there is always the beach to fall back on.

Classy Monday’s: Fourth Monday’s Concerts

Kelly Hall-Tompkins - Violinist

Kelly Hall-Tompkins - Violinist

The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Central Park West at 65th street will be hosting a duo of accomplished musicians this evening at 8pm. The duet will be comprised of Kelly Hall-Tompkins on violin and Olga Vinokur on piano. They will be playing pieces from Shubert and Copland, so while it will be classical, it should be just a little bit rollicking.

Tickets are available at the door for $15. If you want to read more about the series of concerts, check here.

April 24-27: TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour

TribecaThe TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour is a free, self-guided tour of approximately 100 artists’ studios throughout TriBeCa. Bringing artists and the public together, it provides an opportunity for visitors to interact with the artists and see their artwork at the source, the artist’s own studio. An artist-run organization, TOAST has led a true metropolitan “grass roots” path.  It began as an ad-hoc group of artists who wanted to revive a neighborhood art walk.  Now a not-for-profit organization, it is still a grass roots effort, run by the participating artists. Neighborhood businesses and supporters supplement most of the needed funds not covered by the artists’ entry fees.

The Tribeca Film Festival is muscling its way up the chain of international film festivals each season with season looking to be the biggest ever despite the recession. The 2009 Tribeca Film Festival will run from April 22 – May 3 and will include 85 features and 46 short films representing 36 different countries.  The film slate, chosen from 4,720 submissions, features 45 world premieres, 5 international premieres, 15 North American premieres, 3 U.S. premieres and 12 New York premieres.  In addition to the film line-up, there will also be an array of panel discussions, valuable networking opportunities for filmmakers and the industry, gala premieres of highly anticipated new studio releases – including Sony Pictures Classics’ Whatever Works and Fox Searchlight Pictures’ My Life in Ruins – and a number of free, community events, including the Tribeca Drive-In, the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day and the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair.

Out of Work? Get Into NY Entrepreneur Week

April 20, 2009

NYC ENT WEEKYou can get a better education for free in New York than paying thousands of dollars a year in other places. New York Entrepreneur Week is just one way to do that. Starting this morning at 8 am and going until Friday evening, differnent businesses and instittions will be hosting panels and speakers addressing pressing concerns and issues for entrepreneurs. The list of speakers is so comprehensive that just reading their bios on the website is an education in and of itself. Each one has been successful in starting one or more businesses and nearly all of them have attended top tier educational institutions. Dumbfoundingly enough, nearly every single event is absolutely free. Although this seems to have had somewhat of a negative effect, seeing as how everyone RSVPs and then may or may not show up, it certainly is helpful if you are out of work and looking to save some money.

Check out the website here and get involved.
