April 19, 2011The Village Gate’s Old Fashioned Piano Party
April 18, 2011Every Sunday evening, you can, for free, sit in a cabaret style bar and listen to dozens of performers sing show tunes. The songs range from the well known to the sublimely obscure and the talent ranges from good to ‘oh wow, you just happened to have the night off Broadway and decided to come and sing here!” Grab a drink, bring someone you love and enjoy a wide array of music.
The first half of the show is planned around one or two composers. But the second half is open to anyone with the guts to sign up and select one of the thousands (yes, thousands) of songs the pianist, Caleb Hoyer, can play by sight.
Enjoy this video of a song by one of the composers being featured this particular evening.
When: Every Sunday at 9pm
Where: Le Poisson Rouge, NYC
Battle of the Boroughs Video – The Bronx
April 2, 2011Last night seven groups competed to represent The Bronx this year in the Battle of the Boroughs sponsored by WNYC at The Greene Space. More commentary to come — for now, dig into this short video showing a little taste of each group.
Don’t forget the free Clifton Anderson concert at BAM tonight. Hope to see you there!
Welcome to the Church of What’s Happening Now
March 10, 2011That line, from a song by Sia, fits perfectly over todays topic: The Limelight. This deconsecrated Episcopal church-cum-nightclub-cum-shopping mall opened last May. It has steadily added unique one off vendors becoming a “Festival of Shops”. It was really fun to wander through it last weekend. It’s an amalgamation of a Hobbit’s home and the kind of malls I grew up with in Southern California.

I recommend going when the weather is warmer. With a jacket on, I felt like I was always at risk of knocking expensive things over.

Every nook and cranny where saints did pray and sinners did lay, now you too can play if you are willing to pay.
It was a pleasure to squeeze and nose my way through this church. There was plenty to see, taste and try. Expect to pay more than you do in non-ex-religious shopping venues. Check out the Limelight website.
15 William.
July 5, 2009
The William Beaver Building is gradually filling with tenants. Yesterday I spent the fourth there, on the roof watching every firework show in the Tri-state area except the ones on the Hudson. The building is equipped with practically every amenity and convenience including a screening room, lifestyle consultant, full gym and pool, squash, and on and on. Based on the crowd on the roof, the building seems to be a hive buzzing with investment bankers that still have a job and the coterie of hanger-ons: struggling models, actresses and cool guys.
The tower’s façade is charcoal around its lower half, gradually incorporating bright-yellow colored blocks toward the top — a feature that the architects say make the building “glow” both night and day.
At the base the building houses an underground parking garage with 229 spaces. The garage’s entrance is incorporated into the building’s façade design to make it appear less utilitarian and has interior space for 10 cars to queue off of Beaver Street.
Oscar Wilde said, “Be the type of person upon whom nothing is lost.” Somehow I think the building is lost even on most of its tenants but we’ll see what comes of it.

Tonight’s show will feature work from Hillary and her boutique. The show begins at 9pm (read 11:30) at The World Bar Club at Trump World Tower. It is located on 1st avenue at 48th street.
Make Coney Make Money!
April 28, 2009
A land developer in New York City land developer can’t crease a piece of paper without causing some controversy and the Coney Island Festival By The Sea, proposed by Thor Equities is no different. Although Coney Island is undergoing a significant redevelopment, the developers, in an effort to capitalize on their transitional land, have proposed a temporary street fair beginning Friday May 15 and running every day through the summer and then hopefully on the weekends after that. It is expected that the vendors will be many of the same seen in street fairs all over the city but at least in this particular venue you can chill on the beach for a while after shopping for thousands of things you never needed in the first place.
The Festival by the Sea website is attractive and well laid out but makes no secret about the fact that the festival is subject to shorter hours and cancelled days any time as I’m sure the proprietors are not sure people will make the hour long trek out to Coney Island to spend money with street vendors. It could be a really great time since the proposed area for the fair is large and Thor Equities seems dedicated to making it work. Of course if its a bust there is always the beach to fall back on.
Looking into the Weekend: April 24th-26th
April 23, 2009April 24-27: TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour
The TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour is a free, self-guided tour of approximately 100 artists’ studios throughout TriBeCa. Bringing artists and the public together, it provides an opportunity for visitors to interact with the artists and see their artwork at the source, the artist’s own studio. An artist-run organization, TOAST has led a true metropolitan “grass roots” path. It began as an ad-hoc group of artists who wanted to revive a neighborhood art walk. Now a not-for-profit organization, it is still a grass roots effort, run by the participating artists. Neighborhood businesses and supporters supplement most of the needed funds not covered by the artists’ entry fees.

Out of Work? Get Into NY Entrepreneur Week
April 20, 2009
You can get a better education for free in New York than paying thousands of dollars a year in other places. New York Entrepreneur Week is just one way to do that. Starting this morning at 8 am and going until Friday evening, differnent businesses and instittions will be hosting panels and speakers addressing pressing concerns and issues for entrepreneurs. The list of speakers is so comprehensive that just reading their bios on the website is an education in and of itself. Each one has been successful in starting one or more businesses and nearly all of them have attended top tier educational institutions. Dumbfoundingly enough, nearly every single event is absolutely free. Although this seems to have had somewhat of a negative effect, seeing as how everyone RSVPs and then may or may not show up, it certainly is helpful if you are out of work and looking to save some money.
Check out the website here and get involved.
